Fort Ord was a self-sustaining city. It closed its gates to the public in 1969, during the Vietnam War. On General Jim Moore Boulevard, a few of the structures that provided day-to-day amenities still stand. At the end of the boulevard is what students refer to as the "crematorium." Fort Ord alumni call it the "incinerator." Past the incinerator is the graded dust of razed buildings, including an old hotel that surrounded a courtyard so overgrown that it became impassable, and a childcare center.
